Have you checked your credit score lately? You may not be the only one able to access your credit information. Earlier this month, it was reported that identity thieves have been exploiting a glaring security weakness in the website of Experian, one of the big three consumer credit reporting bureaus. Experian experienced a security breach that gave access to thousands of Americans’ personal credit information.
Normally, Experian requires that those seeking a copy of their credit report successfully answer several multiple choice questions about their financial history. But until the end of 2022, Experian’s website allowed anyone to bypass these questions and go straight to the consumer’s report. All that was needed was the person’s name, address, birthday and Social Security number.
What can you do? Each bureau is required to provide a free copy of your credit report every year. The easiest way to get yours is through annualcreditreport.com. When you get your report, look for anything that isn’t yours, and then document and file a dispute with the corresponding credit bureau.
